SOCKET HEAD SHOULDER SCREWS (STRIPPER BOLTS, SHOULDER BOLTS)

The socket head shoulder screws/stripper bolts (also sometimes called Shoulder Bolts) are ground to very close tolerances, with a thick shoulder usually running 80 percent of the length of the shaft. The shafts of other models may have a longer threaded section. In measuring the socket head shoulder screw/stripper bolt, it is the diameter and length of its shoulder that determines its size. The socket head shoulder screw/stripper bolt does not have a point.

The length of the socket head shoulder screw/stripper bolt is determined by (and varies by) length of the shoulder, rather than total length of the part or its shaft.

The socket head is a recessed head in which the sides of the recess are parallel to the body axis, into which a wrench fits. Hence, it is also known as an "internal wrenching head."

Socket head shoulder screws/stripper bolts are used in applications requiring low limited clearance, where parts may not be thick enough to be counterbored, and/or where loading capacity is not critical. The socket head shoulder screw/stripper bolt may also replace more expensive parts such as trunion mountings, shafts, or guides.
